Hunter x Hunter is widely regarded as a masterpiece shounen anime. It has everything a person could want: memorable characters, fantastic story arcs, deep worldbuilding, and arguably the best and most detailed power system in any anime. There was an anime adaptation back in 1999, but the one that people are most familiar with is the 2011 anime. That anime ended in 2014 but the manga continues where the anime left off.

The problem is, due to Yoshihiro Togashi's health problems, the manga is regularly on hiatus and it's unlikely we'll be getting more Hunter x Hunter episodes anytime soon. So what's a person to watch to scratch that Hunter x Hunter itch? Well, here's 15 anime to watch if you love Hunter x Hunter!

Last updated: December 11th, 2019 to include even more action-packed anime that fans of Hunter x Hunter will adore.

15 Seven Deadly Sins

First up on this list is Seven Deadly Sins. When the kingdom of Liones is taken over by the traitorous Holy Knights, Princess Elizabeth must seek the help of the Seven Deadly Sins, the kingdom's most wanted criminals. Like Hunter x HunterSeven Deadly Sins is an action-adventure anime on a grand scale.

Seven Deadly Sins features a large cast of memorable characters and a story full of twists and turns. The fight scenes are also to be commended. Taking a page from Hunter x Hunter's playbook, the fight scenes in this anime require more strategy than typical anime action scenes.

14 Made in Abyss

made-in-abyss

At first glance, Made in Abyss seems like a fun, lighthearted anime about adventuring in a mysterious land in search of wondrous relics, but the more you watch, the darker the themes get. That's something many Hunter x Hunter fans went through when they first started the series thinking it was going to be a fun anime about a boy going on adventures with his friends only to find dark themes about losing one's humanity.

If Hunter x Hunter has left you craving for a well-executed, adventure-focused anime filled with compelling drama, stunning art, and beautiful—and often terrorizing—music, then Made in Abyss is the anime for you.

13 Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

Exploring magical dungeons full of dangers for the promise of vast riches and power sound like something you'd see in Hunter x Hunter, but in this case, it's the central premise of Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic.

Magi follows a young magician named Aladdin on a globe-trekking adventure exploring dungeons some might find reminiscent of Hunter x Hunter. Magi has whimsical characters and great worldbuilding inspired by tales in Arabian Nights. It's a fun action-packed anime that isn't afraid to go a little dark when it needs to.

12 No Game No Life

No Game No Life follows Sora and Shiro, together known as the legendary gamer "Blink", as they play their way through the world of Disboard to challenge the God of Games and rule over Disboard. From the premise of this anime, you might not think it's very similar to Hunter x Hunter, but what both anime share is their approach to battles. Like in Hunter x Hunter, battles in No Game No Life are won using wit instead of physical abilities. If you miss the cerebral and challenging battles of Hunter x Hunter, try giving No Game No Life a go.

11 Naruto

There's hardly anyone who hasn't at least heard of Naruto. You might not know it, but the massively popular ninja anime following Naruto Uzumaki on his journey to become Hokage of his village draws some influence from Hunter x Hunter, which is no surprise considering the mangakas for both series are friends and said they share ideas.

The Uchiha Clan from Naruto and the Kurta Clan from Hunter x Hunter share quite a few similarities. Both are powerful clans that have been wiped out, leaving only one survivor who becomes more powerful when their eyes turn red.

10 JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

If you're looking an anime with a unique power system that has oddly specific rules like Nen in Hunter x Hunter, look no further than JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Like how Nen abilities have specific rules and conditions that must be met to be used, Stand abilities are usually very specific, like a Stand that can control someone's movements but only through the person's wounds and the Stand has to be above the target. Like Nen in Hunter x Hunter creates more cerebral fights, the conditions and limitations of Stands leads to battles that require strategy more than brute strength.

9 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

If you love Hunter x Hunter and haven't seen Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, do yourself a favor and go watch it. Like, right now.

The anime follows two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, searching for the Philosopher's Stone to restore their bodies, which were lost when they used alchemy to try to bring their mother back to life. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the perfect anime to watch if Hunter x Hunter left you wanting well-developed characters and a story that explores deep themes.

8 My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia is great if you're looking for the fun, dynamic fights scenes that you're used to in Hunter x Hunter. Featuring a large cast of memorable characters, My Hero Academia is the story of young Izuku Midoriya, a boy born without superpowers in a world where almost everyone has powers and his journey to become the greatest superhero.

The anime could have taken the easy route and make the fight scenes all about strength, but during battle, the characters have to be strategic with using their powers, which should be right up your alley if you're a fan of Hunter x Hunter's fights.

7 One Piece

Hunter x Hunter is an anime with a grand scale of adventure that few anime have been able to match as well as One Piece.

The anime centers on a young man named Monkey D. Luffy who dreams of becoming a pirate captain and finding the legendary One Piece treasure left behind by Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King. One Piece is the longest running anime on this list but you only need to watch a few episodes to fall in love with its swashbuckling adventure and ensemble cast of characters.

6 Yu Yu Hakusho

What better anime is there to watch if you love Hunter x Hunter than Yu Yu Hakusho, an anime made by the same creator? Yoshihiro Togashi created Yu Yu Haskusho before Hunter x Hunter but both anime have a similar feel.

Yu Yu Hakusho follows Yusuke Urameshi, who died saving a young boy and becomes an underworld detective, solving mysteries concerning demons that have been let loose upon the human world. This classic anime explores themes similar to Hunter x Hunter and the characters can be seen as precursors to the characters in Hunter x Hunter. If you love Hunter x Hunter, it's very difficult to imagine that you wouldn't like Yu Yu Hakusho.

5 Dr. Stone

Dr. Stone is focused on the story of Senku and his friends whose lives change forever when a strange phenomenon turns the entire population of humans on earth into stone. Thousands of years later, Senku wakes up but finds himself living in the Stone-Age once again. With nothing but his brain to aid him, Senku sets off on an incredible adventure.

Just like Hunter X Hunter, the story of Dr. Stone sees a prodigious protagonist adventure across the unknown. If that's something you enjoyed about Hunter X Hunter, you'll definitely love Dr. Stone as well.

4 Mob Psycho 100

Mob Psycho 100 revolves around Shigeyo Kageyama, also known as Mob, who wakes up to strange psychic powers one day. Choosing to suppress his power because of its dangerous nature, Mob tries to venture how to use it properly and slowly understand what the essence behind the power is.

Mob Psycho 100's world is full of crazy abilities, akin to what we see in Hunter x Hunter. The anime is also incredibly hilarious and connects well to the fun nature of Hunter x Hunter. Mob's adventure, although not as good as Gon's, is something that you'll cherish!

3 Dororo

One of 2019's most loved anime, Dororo is a gem when it comes to anime wit beautifully written stories. Like Hunter X Hunter, Dororo fits right into the category. Although a bit more on the darker side, Dororo has sides to it that are reminiscent of Hunter X Hunter, especially the latter half of it.

The story is set in an age where a samurai lord, named Daigo Kagemitsu, thirsts for power so much that he takes to praying to the demons. Just like he wanted, 12 demons listen to his demands and grant him his wishes, however, the price to pay is his firstborn son. Kagemitsu abandons the child who is born as an anomaly and thus is left to yet. However, he ends up living.

2 Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

A story written incredibly well, Kimetsu no Yaiba is certainly one that could rival the likes of Hunter x Hunter. The anime premiered in early 2019 and was treated to a mind-blowing reception. The adaptation by Ufotable was precisely what the show needed, however, the story for the anime is its strongest asset.

Demon Slayer follows the story if Tanjiro who lives in a world where demons exist among humans. Tanjiro's days go by in peace right until his sister gets turned into a demon as well. Ready to give up everything to return her back to normal, Tanjiro sets out on an incredible journey that sees many others join him with different goals in their minds.

1 The Promised Neverland

Speaking of Demons, we have another masterpiece which Hunter x Hunter fans will absolutely adore. The Promised Neverland anime is kind of similar to the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter, although a bit darker, and there is no Nen for kids to defend themselves from Demons who see them as livestock.

The story follows the journey of Emma, who lives happily among other children in an orphanage run by a sister. Often, children are sent off to families willing to adopt them. When Emma tries to say goodbye to her sister, she finds out that none of what they're told is true. Instead of being sent to new families, the children are eaten by the demons. With no escape, Emma must plan with her allies to save everyone from meeting inevitable doom.
